The Christian Wife

So this week we continued our marriage series in our Sunday School class. Last week we discussed the Christian Husband, so it only made sense to look at the Christian Wife this week.

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.”

-Ephesians 5:22

It’s obvious to me that this doesn’t mean what the world thinks it does. It doesn’t mean the wife is to be a servant to her husband. Remember the parallel of Christ and the church to the husband and wife? The wife is supposed to be like the church, honoring and uplifting her husband (v. 24). When a husband is being the spiritual leader and loves his wife the way God commanded, then the wife’s command to submit to him is going to be an easy task she will want to do. Verse 22 doesn’t say submit as a servant to his master, it says as unto the Lord. If my husband loves me the way that Christ loves the Church then why wouldn’t I want to show reverence toward him?

  1. I makes sense when you put it like that.

  2. Good post. I'd like to make a comment though. A wife's obedience to God is not dependent on her husband's obedience to God. So whether or not the husband is being the spiritual leader he is commanded to be by God, the wife should still submit to her husband. The same thing goes the other way. A person's obedience to God is not dependent on the actions of another person. Just a thought!
